See You on the Other Side…?

What you are about to read sounds like something out of a Hollywood disaster movie…okay, maybe a “mini-disaster” movie…

But, I was reminded about such a valuable lesson by none other than those closest to me…

Yesterday it was raining so hard that many areas of Cape Town were flooded:

  • Major roads were flooded and closed to traffic…
  • I attended a Business Breakfast and we met on the 4th floor. When it was time to leave, we had to leave through an alternative exit because the lower level of the building was flooded…?!
  • I drove through knee deep water on a number of roads and saw water spurting out of drain and manhole covers like fountains…
  • People’s houses were flooded and it was a long, cold night for many…

This sounds like something out of a disaster movie…Okay, maybe one of those “B-grade” disaster movies…or perhaps one of those “B-grade” TV mini-series…?! Either way, it is very sad and even depressing…But, my children taught me a very valuable lesson yesterday…

It is an innate ability of children to always see “the other side”…the brighter side.

Despite all the pandemonium in Cape Town, my 2 year old daughter and 5 year old son asked Daddy to go “puddle hunting” with them. We drove around the suburb in which we live looking for the biggest puddles we could find. And believe me, there were some HUGE ones!!

We then proceeded to make some of the BIGGEST splashes you have ever seen…Wow it was fun!!

Now, I do not mean to take anything away from the people who were experiencing some really awful things yesterday…

But, in the midst of all of this, Katie and Liam only saw an opportunity to have some fun…to play…to make the most of the situation. It reminded me of the saying “every cloud has a silver lining”…we just need to choose to see it!!

Now, children seem do this naturally…Spend a bit of time with your children…or if you don’t have any of your own make a concerted effort to spend time with your friend’s or a family member’s children.

It can be life-changing…see the world and your circumstances through someone else’s eyes…”see the lighter and brighter side of life”.
