Do you Break the Fast…?

Yesterday, I worked at a Wellness Day at a very popular Hotel here in Cape Town. I had some great conversations with those attending. There was an interesting nutrition concern that I kept addressing…

Why should you “break the fast”? Or more specifically: “Why should you eat breakfast?”

One of the conversationsĀ  started by the person telling me that they exercised consistently and ate healthily, but just could not seem to lose weight.

Since addressing nutrition is key to weight loss success, I started by asking:

“So, tell me what you had for breakfast this morning?”

The response : “Well, I don’t always eat breakfast…mornings are pretty busy for me…”

And therein lies the problem!! And also the solution to dramatically change weight loss results.

Breakfast is quite literally “breaking the fast” as you have been fasting for 8-12 hours during the night.

Over the next few minutes I proceeded to explain:

1). Breakfast should be your biggest (not smallest or skipped) meal of the day.

2). Breakfast kickstarts your metabolism for the day. If you skip it, you will have a slower metabolism for an extended part of your day!

3). Breakfast is the best time to eat Carbohydrates. Your body is primed to deal with carbs at breakfast as insulin sensitivity and carbohydrate tolerance are highest.

You just cannot afford to skip breakfast. It is an absolute necessity if your goal is weight loss.

So, what did you have for breakfast this morning?
